Description
The Limping Foot – b/w “Psalm 100” – is a two-sided 7-inch vinyl single by the American garage rock combo Sons of Thunder, released on Omega in 1970 (catalogue number Omega 67-406). Both were non-album tracks. Side A – “On the right path the Limping Foot recovers strength and does not collapse”, otherwise known as “The Limping Foot” – was written by Blaine Smith and features Don Williamson on lead vocals. Side A – “Psalm 100” – was both written and sung by Joan Hettenhouser (a.k.a. Joan Tinsley).
In 1970 Washington, D.C.’s Sons of Thunder produced a two-sided 45 RPM single featuring «Limping Foot» as the A-side. An oft-performed SOT song at the time, it was inspired by the J.B. Phillips New Testament’s rendering of Hebrews 12:13, which is literally, “On the right path the Limping Foot recovers strength and does not collapse.” (The Phillips modern English translation of the N.T. was very popular in America at that time.) «Limping Foot» was written by band member Blaine Smith and sung by Don Williamson. Others featured on the record include Donna Gadling (vocals, organ), Blaine Smith (guitar), Robin Woodhams (vocals, bass), Leslie White (vocals, tambourine), and Don Williamson (drums), as well as Ed Weaver (piano). (Ed was an added player on this session, though he joined the band about six months later.)
«Psalm 100» is featured on the flip-side of the single. «Psalm 100» was written and sung by band member Joan Hettenhouser (now Tinsley). Other SOT members featured on the record include Blaine Smith (guitar), Donna Gadling (organ), Robin Woodhams (bass), and Don Williamson (drums). Additional players featured include Rudy Gabreletto (steel guitar) and Jim Walker (banjo). It was recorded at Rodel Studios in Washington, D.C., with Nelson Funk engineering.
Singer Leslie White replaced SOT founding member Joan Hettenhouser just before this recording was made. [ Leslie is seen in photos on the song’s final chorus, and Joan in photos before that. ]
Sons of Thunder produced the first nationally-distributed album by a Christian rock band in the U.S., ‘Till the Whole World Knows,’ in 1968 on Zondervan Records.
