Description
Inner Space is the sophomore full-length album by the British synth-pop project Zero Option, the one-man-band of keyboardist/vocalist Ralph Ward (on this album credited “Ralph Ward’s Zero Option”), released in the UK on cassette-only by ICC in 1991. The album was produced, recorded, and mixed by Matthias Kaufmann at ICC Studios’ Studio 2 in Eastbourne, England. (“Produced and distributed by ICC.”) All songs written and arranged by Ralph Ward.
Lead vocals, keyboards, and drum programming by Ralph Ward, with background vocals provided by Martin Smith of Delirious? fame and Ralph Ward.
Never having cared for Ralph’s earlier album I approached this set with precious little enthusiasm. But I soon changed my mind. Zero Option (the moniker Ralph Ward uses to cover his keyboard playing and drum programming) has dearly upgraded his gear, toughened up his sound and gone for a set of pop-gospel songs with enough house music sensibilities to make one forget the rather wimpish sounding recording of old. Songs often get close to the worship genre and one or two could almost be from Nine O’clock Service rave. Occasionally Ralph’s vocals are a bit colourless and the worship ballads («Shine Your Light») dull but with some good hooks and some pretty hard rhythms on most tracks interest never completely disappears. Check it out. [Tony Cummings, Cross Rhythms, October 1991]
