One Way Out

Description

One Way Out is a five-track cassette-only EP by the American multi-musician/producer John Covell, independently released in 1986. (Copyright David’s Harp Ministries, Anaheim, California.) All songs written, arranged, produced, and performed by John Covell. “Who Can Stand”, “One Way Out”, and “At Your Feet Again” recorded by Rich Eliot and mixed by Eddy Keaggy at Headway Studios in Westminster, California. “Who Sees Inside of Me” and “My Own Way” recorded at David’s Harp.

To be honest, I grabbed this tape hoping that the similarities between the cover design and Nine Inch Nails was on purpose. And that may or may not be the case, but this is not industrial. It’s actually some interesting synth-pop/new wave/techno music from 1986. It’s kind of somewhere between Mad at the World’s debut and Painted Orange – but a few years earlier in sound. I can’t find much out there other than the fact that Covell had a follow-up tape in 1988 called Human Beings, but I haven’t heard that one yet. He definitely nailed the 80s sound on this album, even though the entire tape is him doing everything. [Christian Tape Underground, January 23, 2022]
