Description
The four-track cassette-only EP Metal Missionaries is the debut effort by the American hard rock/metal band Bloodgood, self-released in 1985. The EP was recorded and mixed by Charles Meserole at Extra Sensory Productions in Bellevue, Washington; with the band producing.
The band features Les Carlsen on lead vocals (a former member of Sticker), David Zaffiro on guitar, and a rhythm section consisting of Michael Bloodgood on bass (a former member of Cypress) and J.T. Taylor on drums. (Both Zaffiro and Taylor were former members of the Crystal City Rockers.)
So this is a really well-known early Christian metal demo. Not much I can say about this here, as most people reading this site will know about these songs. The band re-released this demo on CD in 2010 with a bonus interview and demo track (from 2010, not 1986). This demo was the start of a long (and still going) career for one of the top Christian metal bands. The first three songs were re-recorded for the band’s self-titled label debut in 1986. «Battle of the Flesh» was re-recorded on Detonation in 1987. These are, of course, earlier rawer versions – but that helps the metal power as well. Before this, Les Carlson had been doing many things, including a band called Sticker covered here earlier. Michael Bloodgood had been involved in a band called Cypress before forming this band. David Zaffiro had been in a band called the Crystal City Rockers. Note: Originally released as a 4-track cassette only. Remastered and re-issued as a CDr in 2010 by B. Goode Records entitled Metal Missionaries (25th Anniversary Edition), featuring two bonus tracks: a 16 minutes 1985 Radio Interview hosted by Keith Black and a demo version of “Man In The Middle” (a song to be included on the upcoming Bloodgood album). Remastered and re-issued on both (45 RPM) 12-inch vinyl and CD by Girder Records in 2021, featuring three bonus tracks: “Black Snake” (Original Unedited Version) – 3:23, “Awake!” (Alternate Mix) – 4:03, and “Man In The Middle” (2010 Demo) – 4:16.
