Description
Tough and Skinny is an album by the American singer and songwriter Wes Cunningham, independently released in September 2024, though recorded around 2000. (The album was shelved by his record label, Warner Brothers, and never officially released. Finally self-released by Cunningham in 2024.)
Around 2000 I made a second record for Warner Brothers that was never released. We recorded it in Nashville and London with many great musicians; Pat Sansone, Rob Mitchell, Chris Graffagnino, Emilie Johnson, Julia Cunningham, and Lindsey Jameison. Co-produced with Joe Baldridge and mixed by Richard Dodd.
I gave it everything I had and was devastated when the label decided not to release it. That was 23 years ago. Last year, someone called me from a Nashville storage unit and told me they were going to throw away all these old tapes… unless I wanted them. Originally there were 20+ songs. Now 12.
It’s a moment in time. The end of youth. The desperate need for recognition and connection. Still, it’s good art. Earnest. And urgent. And I’m grateful to Emilie for still loving me. Happy birthday baby! Thanks Chris Ermoian in Waco for helping me bring these back. – Wes Cunningham
