Keaggy, Blazier and Lunn notes: An American Garage Band
Here are seven jams that were recorded in July of 2008. My friend, drummer/producer Bobby Blazier (Michael Martin Murphey, Wynonna, KT Oslin, etc.), invited me to come to his studio to jam and record some music together. He played fabulously on drums and I played my Strat and Zion electric guitars and used my looping pedals and effects into my Vox AC30 top-boost amp. It was magical. The completely improvised session was recorded by Jeremy Hunter but we had no plans for an official release. It was a fun session and we both simply moved on.
With the creation of Keaggy’s Garage in June of 2019, I started combing through my drives looking for interesting unreleased recordings. I found these sessions again and after a few listens I really fell in love with the vibe we had captured. In December of 2019, (11 1/2 years later!), I invited Gary Lunn (Whiteheart, Glen Campbell, Toby Keith, etc.) to come to my studio and add bass to these jams. Only someone of Gary’s skill and sensitivity could’ve made these tunes sound so organic. On the original recordings, there were no overdubs (until Gary’s bass was added.) You can hear «Blazin’ Saddles» without the bass on Jammed (Complete) philkeaggy.bandcamp.com/album/jammed-complete
After all these years, I find this music to be quite creative and fresh. What I most enjoy is the musical connection that happened between Bobby and myself. My playing is very chordal and not a bunch of lead riffs. I decided not to overdub leads and keep it raw and rhythmic. Gary’s bass was the cherry on top and the fullness on the bottom.
I wanted to call this music An American Garage Band as we recorded these pieces at “Blazing Saddles” (Bobby’s studio) at Marathon Village, which was originally an old auto manufacturer. I edited the tracks after the bass was added and my son Ian mastered the finalized songs. He and I came up with titles. I feel it was quite inspired… I hope you will enjoy the love and energy that went into the music. Thanks for listening!
