Description
Field of Souls is the ninth studio album by the American singer and songwriter Wayne Watson, released on Warner Alliance in 1995, a gospel division of Warner Bros. Records. The album was produced by Wayne Watson (tracks 2 and 4), Michael Omartian (tracks 1, 3, and 6), and David Pack of Ambrosia fame (tracks 5 and 7 to 10).
Few familiar with Wayne Watson’s music will question his ability to write good songs, ‘Field of Souls’, Watson’s debut album for Warner Alliance, offers further proof that his knack for writing biblically-solid, spiritually-oriented songs is indeed legitimate.
Finely produced by Watson, Michael Omartian, and David Pack, the album features uptempo pop numbers as well as several stirring ballads. The anthemic title cut is a rallying cry to the body of Christ to enter the “field of souls” and reap the harvest for the kingdom. «One Time in Each Forever» is a beautiful, at times haunting, song pondering the sufficiency of Christ’s death for our salvation. «The Class of ’95» was already a #1 hit with radio earlier this year; it finds Watson’s realization of some years back that “watercolour ponies will one day ride away” coming true. The song was written for his son as he graduated from high school this year and is a thoughtful message to one about to enter a world where “life can sure mistreat you/ …And troubled times will take their toll.”
Watson serves up «If I Were You», a snappy number about dealing with self-righteousness before closing the album with the lushly-orchestrated «Blessed Are». The song features gorgeous flute and penny whistle work by Sam Levine and fittingly leaves the listener with the reminder, “Blessed are the true peacemakers… working in the field of souls.”
‘Field of Souls’ is a fine project with thoughtful, well-written songs that are likely to strike a chord in hearts for years to come. [Michael Ciani, CCM, November 1995]
