Description
Silent Witness, sub-titled A Tribute to Country’s Gospel Legacy Volume One, is a multi-artist compilation released on New Haven Records in 1995, under license from Sony Music, distributed in the US by Brentwood Music. Also released on Sony Music Entertainment, manufactured by Columbia Records, featuring different cover artwork (by Reverend Howard Finster). The album was produced by Mac McAnally and Ricky Skaggs.
Touted as “a tribute to country’s gospel legacy,” this seemingly random compilation of Christian country music serves up a well-seasoned feast for the ears, the hungry heart and the spirit. From the spare, wobbly vocals of vintage Johnny Cash to the smooth, sophisticated, country-pop styling of Sawyer Brown, every song offers a powerful testimony of faith.
Ricky Skaggs shines as he seeks «The Mind of Christ», written by Geoff Thurman and Michael Puryear. But the heart of this project beats strongest in the simple, down-home delivery of Southern gospel greats Jerry and Tammy Sullivan who offer two songs with multi-talented country music performer Marty Stuart. Glen Campbell, The Gatlin Brothers and Tammy Wynette round out this all-star cast.
New Haven also offers a video version of this project. The video provides moving testimonies by each of these artists which give these songs deeper, more personal meaning. [Randy Moomaw, CCM, January 1996]
