Greenbelt Fringe ’95

Description

Greenbelt Fringe ’95 is a multi-artist compilation album featuring 20 British indie artists who all performed on the Fringe at the Greenbelt Festival that year, independently released on Plankton Records in 1995.

A fascinating compilation of tracks not recorded live at the Greenbelt Fringe but studio tracks – mostly privately released or unreleased by artists who played ’95’s Greenbelt Fringe. So you get artists well known to readers of Cross Rhythms (Jonathan Day, Fresh Claim, Skellig) and others less well known (Bernard’s Dog, Jon Bickley And Angel Train, Asylum). Because acoustic guitar thrashers are the most easily slotted in items at a gi’sa gig mayhem of a fringe, roots styles tend to dominate here with the odd sprinkling of distortion here and there. This album isn’t bad at all, and it’s good value. It lasts for 73 minutes, ranging from the funky stuff of the Moose Machine to the metal of 3rd Day. As mentioned folky things abound, but virtually every song (with only one or two exceptions) is catchy enough to hold most people’s attention. [Terry Wright, Cross Rhythms, December 1995]
