Various Artists – Coalition: The Hip Hop Alliance

Description

Coalition: The Hip Hop Alliance is a multi-artist compilation released on ForeFront Records in 2000, distributed in the US by Chordant Distribution Group. Edited by Shawn Andrews. Additional mixes by Noland and Sir Pigeon John. Executive Producers: Pigeon John for The Telephone Company and Mark Nicholas & David Bach for ForeFront Records.

Hip-hop is today’s most influential music. It is what jazz and bebop were in the late 40’s: hip, slick and focused. It is not considered music by some, as was with jazz in its prime. This alienation has caused hip-hop artists to turn within themselves and create their own communities and lifestyles. These communes are made up of 4 major elements: DJing, BBOYing, aerosol artists, and last but not least, MCing or rapping.

The compilation that you now hold is an example of this fourth and foundational element of hip-hop. The strength of hip-hop is in its diversity and so with this CD. We chose a wide variety of MCs from all over America to join this Coalition and we hope that you the listener will be engaged to join as well…. [Album liner notes]

It may or may not be obvious to you that hip hop is currently one of the largest selling styles of music and arguably the most influential. But just because something is popular doesn’t necessarily make it good. Well, listen to this release from Forefront Records. A 14-artist collective – distinctly different in looks and style but with a message that is without doubt hard hitting. A mix of both new and old names with the album opening up with a distinctive two-step Latin flava from LA Symphony and which will certainly have you moving to the groove. This high-energy album is full of strong beats and powerful thought provoking lyrics, an ambitious mix of sounds that make the album. From the innovative and infectious style of MG! The Visionary in «Sponsible» where he stands by what he professes, to the more laid back flava of relative newcomer Tapwater in «Release». Not forgetting, John Reuben and his track «Gather In», for the party people as he states. He is big news in the US and a definite contender to stand tall in the UK. Compilations can work when the selection is carefully chosen and ‘Coalition’ is one to check out. [Howard McCalla, Cross Rhythms, October 2000]
