7ball was an American music magazine founded and created by Frank Chimento, published between 1995 and 2004 (with the first issue being the July/August 1995 magazine). They focused on Christian artists working in genres such as indie rock, metal, hip-hop, and other “alternative” forms of music. Its primary competition were magazines such as CCM, HM, and True Tunes News.
7ball was initially published by the Royal Magazine Group (Nashville, TN), a division of Thomas Nelson, alongside Release Magazine and others. The magazine was initially edited by Chris Well, former editor of the Christian rock magazine Syndicate, until 1996. In 1996, the magazine was sold to VoxCorp (Nashville, TN). Well was promoted to editor in chief of the entire company, overseeing 7ball, Release, and others, and former CCM assistant editor Bruce A. Brown was hired as managing editor of 7ball. Brown edited through the end of 1997, and was eventually replaced by Cameron Strang. In early 1999 7ball gained distribution to Family Christian Stores, the largest Christian bookstore chain. Strang edited into 2001 (then founded the Relevant Media Group, which began publishing Relevant Magazine in 2003). There were no publication in 2002. Published during 2003-2004 by Adolph Agency (Puyallup, WA). 7ball ceased publication in 2004.
Many issues contained covermount compilation CDs. Beginning with Issue #12 in 1997, the magazine included a 7ball Gas Collection sampler CD with each issue, full of songs from a wide variety of Christian rock artists. Usually at least 15 songs and well over an hour of music, often including a couple of up-and-coming independent artists that few had yet heard of.
