Out of the Blue is the fifth album by the American singer, songwriter, and guitarist Tom Prasada-Rao, self-released on Ahimsa Acoustics in 2003.

Part soul man, part singer-songwriter, Tom Prasada-Rao kicks off his latest release by segueing from an original love song, complete with a dreamy chorus, into a Sly Stone-inspired coda. That’s the first indication Prasada-Rao can’t shake his R&B roots, and there’s plenty more to come.

And the more the better, too, since nothing sets Prasada-Rao apart from the coffeehouse competition as engagingly as his affection for soul music. It shines through several arrangements on the album, adding a rhythmic tug to his bluesy admonition «Addicted» and a combination of funk beats and sweet harmonies to a smartly updated version of Phil Och’s antiwar ballad «Is There Anybody Here?» Much of the textured music also celebrates Prasada-Rao’s Indian heritage in subtle, atmospheric ways.

None of the lyrics, however, are nearly as intriguing as the songwriter’s liner notes, which briefly describe how the album’s digital mixes were lost after Prasada-Rao was ordered off a plane after Sept. 11, 2001.
