The Straw Theory

Description

The self-titled album by the American indiepop band The Straw Theory was released on KMG Records in 1999. The album was recorded by Richie Biggs at Chaton Studios in Phoenix, Arizona; and at The Green Room in Huntington Beach, California; and was produced and arranged by Billy Smiley of White Heart fame for Northern Productions with Terry Scott Taylor of Daniel Amos fame for Stunt Productions. Vocals engineered by Billy Smiley. Mixed by Richie Biggs and Skidd Mills (tracks 2, 6, and 9) at the Art House in Nashville, Tennessee and at Ardent Studios in Memphis, Tennessee. All songs written by band member Tyler Huston.

The Straw Theory is Tyler Huston on piano and lead vocals, Jake Bramante on bass and vocals, and Josiah Bramante on drums, percussion, and vocals.

The best way to describe this is a bit like Jars Of Clay with pianos. This a promising debut from American band The Straw Theory. The Main standout tracks include «In And Out», «Falling Forward», the soft ballad «Showers» and «We Believe» talking about the hope we have in God. Sixpence None The Richer singer Leigh Nash joins them on «Man On The Moon» and «Showers» and this makes a nice addition. Overall this is a good album and it sounds like the band could make it big, but now they are standing in the shadows of Jars Of Clay. This is well worth listening out for. [Daniel Cole, Cross Rhythms, April 2000]

With a list of guest musicians which reads like a who’s who of left-of-center Christian music, The Straw Theory deliver a CD which draws influences from across the alternative spectrum but serve them up with a pop sheen. The energy and precision of the opening track isn’t repeated, but the ideas aren’t all exhausted there and this ranks with Chasing Furies’s debut as proof that the alternative Christian music scene retains a few young hopefuls. With production from Terry Taylor, contributions from members of Common Children, the Prayer Chain, the Choir and vocals from Leigh Nash, this is an album and a band with a lot of promise.
