Praise 4: In His Time

Description

Praise 4, sub-titled In His Time, is a multi-artist compilation released on Maranatha! Music in 1980. It is the fourth album of an ongoing series of praise and worship compilations known as The Praise Series, recorded by The Maranatha Singers. The album was recorded by Chris Taylor, Dan Willard, Thom Roy, and Jonathan David Brown at Whitefield Studios in Santa Ana, California; with Tom Coomes of Love Song fame producing. Arranged by Harlan Rogers of Koinonia. Mixed by Jonathan David Brown at Whitefield Studios.

This is the fourth in Maranatha! Music’s highly successful “Praise Album” series. They’ve changed the nomenclature a bit this time out, giving the album a titled in addition to a number.

Like the other Praise Albums, ‘In His Time’ offers simple, singable praise choruses which have been chosen from the many sung regularly at Costa Mesa’s Calvary Chapel. Tom Coomes once again assumes the role of producer, and he has come up with possibly the most consistently pleasing praise package yet. The vocals are smoother than ever before, even glossy at times. Although the individual singers have never been emphasized, they are even less so here.

Coomes has reached back a few years to pick up some real gems such as Gaither’s «I Will Serve You (Thee)», Bill Sprouse’s «Psalm 5» (solo by Terry Clark) and Bob Sklar’s «Micah 6:8». One of the more notable vocal contributions comes from Jack Searle, an MOR artist who has just released his own album on the Good Life label. One of Praise IV’s finest moments, however, is «I Love You, Lord» the last cut on side two.

The arrangements are very tastefully handled – the strings and horns don’t get in the way, as has been their wont at times previously. The album is of such high quality, it is obvious that many talented people had a hand in it. When you see the list on the album sleeve, you’ll see why they couldn’t all be listed here. Special mention to Tom Coomes and the Lord for putting it all together. [CCM, April 1980]
