One More Song for You is an album by the American pop quartet The Imperials, released on DaySpring Records in 1979, a division of Word. The album was recorded by John Guess at Jennifudy Studios in North Hollywood, and at Hollywood Central Recorders in Hollywood, California; with Michael Omartian producing and arranging. All songs written by Michael and Stormie Omartian except “Living Without Your Love” written by Tom Hemby, “Eagle Song” written by Russ and Tori Taff, “I’m Forgiven” written by Bruce Hibbard and Hadley Hockensmith (and recorded by Hibbard on his 1980-album Never Turnin’ Back), and “Higher Power” written by Denny Correll (also recorded by Darrell Mansfield on his 1979-album by the same title).
One More Song For You was included among CCM Magazine’s Top 10 Albums of 1980.
They’ve done it again! The Imperials, one of Christian music’s oldest and most successful groups, have come up with another bonafide winner – an album which virtually completes their gradual metamorphosis from a southern gospel to a contemporary outfit. One More Song For You is a solid collection that would sound right at home on the playlists of most moderate rock stations. The sound is bright, buoyant and fully contemporary with the easy listening music of today.
For this record the Imperials selected Michael Omartian as producer and arranger – a wise choice indeed as Omartian (himself a veteran of many secular sessions) has given some of his finest work here. Michael and his wife Stormie also contributed five of the album’s nine tunes, including the title song and a slightly rearranged version of «More Like You» (from their recent Seasons of the Soul LP).
Various musical influences come to mind in listening to this album – the spirited horn arrangement on the Omartian-Bruce Hibbard-Hadley Hockensmith collaboration «I’m Forgiven» could come from any number of songs by Earth, Wind and Fire. The vocal arrangement on Russ and Tori Taff’s «Eagle Song» is reminiscent of Dave Mason’s finest ballads, and so on. But finally, it is the Imperials themselves – four distinct vocal styles and ranges which solo or blend equally well – that given the music its unique character and personality. Any group that can sing everything from traditional southern gospel to a rocker like Denny Correll‘s «Higher Power» will always have an audience of ears to hear each time they decide to sing one more song for Him.
