Description
Restless Heart is the sophomore and final album by the American rock trio The Holidays, released on Broken Records in 1989, a Brainstorm Artists International imprint manufactured and distributed by Word. The album was produced and recorded by Ojo Taylor of Undercover fame at Mixing Lab B in Huntington Beach and Pakaderm West in Los Alamitos, California. Mixed at Pakaderm.
The Holidays is Mini Mendez on bass and lead vocals, Marky Schrock on guitar and vocals, and Rich Michaels on drums.
While good bands with great debuts drag their feet in terror as they head toward their second release, fearing the dreaded “sophomore slump,” good bands with so-so first efforts, often gird up their loins and go in fighting. The Holidays, whose debut slid by barely unnoticed and gratefully so, comes back with ‘Restless Heart’ and this time they mean it.
Ojo Taylor produced again, but this time there appears to have been a real budget. Marky Shrock’s guitars ring out with bright biting chords, Rich Michaels drums are bold and solid, and Mini Mendez let’s his gravelly Sammy BoDean voice loose on some really fine pop/rock hooks a la the Knack and Plimsouls. This power pop/post-punk trio delivers eleven fine, aggressive tracks, and never looks back, or sideways. It’s a forward thinking “make it or break it” record, that manages to do both. You gotta respect this kind of energy. This is a holiday worth taking. [Brian Q. Newcomb, Harvest Rock Syndicate, No. 4, 1989 (Volume 4)]
