Big Silent World is an album by the British Celtic folk-rock band The Electrics, released on the German gospel label Pila Music in 1993. The album was produced, recorded, and mixed May 1993 by Kevin Key at CA VA Sound Workshops in Glasgow, Scotland.
The Electrics are Sammy Horner on lead and background vocals, mandolin, bass, and bodhrán; Allan Hewitt on keyboards, Hammond organ, accordion, whistles, acoustic guitar, tambourine, and background vocals; Paul Baird on acoustic and electric guitars, mandolin, and background vocals; and David McArthur on drums, percussion, and background vocals. Additional vocals by Fiona Reid (track 2) and Christie McAlindon (track 11). The album also features Stuart Nisbet on pedal steel guitar, Gavin Marwick on fiddle, and Iain Taylor on pipes (track 14).
Music doesn’t come finer than this. Sammy Homer and the gang have pulled together a high protein, hugely enjoyable set, bursting with songs that pummel you into paying undivided attention to what’s happening. The irresistible combination is of sizzling Celtic-based folk sounds allied to thoughtful lyrics indicating an acute degree of awareness and concern. You want disturbing? Try «End Of The World», full of endtimes pain. You prefer to dance to a nifty little song of gratitude? Right away, sir, we recommend «Here’s To You». Something traditional you say? Nothing better than the blistering attack of «The Irish Rover» to savage your shoes. Social awareness? It’s «Take Take Take» for you, my son, that’ll sort you out. As someone with considerable involvement with secular folk music, believe me when I say that this is as wonderful as almost anything out there. Must go now, gotta play it again.
