Description
The self-titled full-length debut album by the American indie-rock/ska band The Deluxtone Rockets was released on Tooth & Nail Records in 1999. The album was produced, recorded, and mixed by Gene Eugene of Adam Again fame, Dennis Danell, and Luis Garcia at The Green Room in Huntington Beach and Front Page Recorders in Glendale, California; December 1998. Additional recording by Brian Lebrun at Desert Moon Recording in Anaheim, California.
The Deluxtone Rockets are Johnny “The Ace” Rocketti on lead vocals and guitar, Jimmy Dean on upright bass and backing vocals, and “J.J.” Sorn on drums, as well as Tim Tahoe on trumpet and backing vocals, Jacob “The Enforcer” Dykema on tenor saxophone and backing vocals, and Richard “Richardo Venezuela” Mittwede on trombone and backing vocals.
The media hype of the swing revival is dying down and music journalists are shifting to the next big thing. The music of swing, however, remains intact.
And it mutates. Deluxtone Rockets from Ypsilanti, Mich., swing with rhythmically propulsive authority in overdrive. Credit it to an immersion in the music filtered through the urgency of a punk rock mindframe.
The Deluxtone Rockets’ take on swing and related styles equals fun in spades. Titles like «God’s Cadillac», «Be Bop a Go Go» and «Hi-Fi Daddy» should telegraph that these guys aren’t in the mood to write grand theological treaties. On the other hand, «Johnny in the Mirror» and «You Get Burned» take cautionary looks at the excesses of the swingin’ and rockin’ life without slowing down the party. The audible snarl of guitarist and lead singer Johnny Rocketti informs his band’s light and dark lyrical moments with Presleyan gusto.
The Rocket’s forcefulness comes from the ferocious spirit and the diversity of musical styles the act shoves into its swing. Rocketti handles his ax in such a way as to mine a feisty middle ground between the mean splash of surf music and the country-filled flavor of the original punk sound of the ’50s, rockabilly.
‘The Deluxtone Rockets’ is a blast. [Jamie Lee Rake, CCM, October 1999]
