Description
The self-titled (a.k.a. [“untitled”]) major label debut album by the South African electronic pop/rock band The Benjamin Gate was released on ForeFront Records in May 2001, distributed by Chordant Distribution Group in th US and C.M.C. Distribution in Canada. The album was recorded at SABC Studio 1 in Port Elizabeth, South Africa; July 2000, and as well in the US at Earful Sound in Franklin, Tennessee; November 2000; with Michael Scott Quinlan producing. Mixed by Chuck Zwicky (tracks: 9 to 11), JR McNeeley (tracks: 1, 4), Julian Kindred (tracks: 3, 7), and Shane D. Wilson (tracks: 2, 5, 6, 8, 12, 77).
This South African rock worship team were due to play the Cross Rhythms festival 2000 before being launched on the international scene by Forefront Records. Consequently this is an excellently produced and well honed futuristic sounding pop most distinctly memorable for some ingeniously inventive fuzzy and echoing guitars and a confidently promising lead vocal in Adrienne Liesching. Slightly discordant rock, esoteric guitars on «Lay It Down» and the trance-like dance beat of «Nightglow» means the band rarely shift gears, but with a curious mixture of influences ranging from Garbage, The Cranberries and U2 they possess a professional coolness marked for success. The Benjamin Gate – Comeputyourheadupinmyheart (independent CD)
The Benjamin Gate sound like a solo artist but instead they’re a band from South Africa who are playing at this year’s Cross Rhythms festival. Judging from this well constructed mix of frenetic rock’n’roll and the tentative heartfelt atmospheric ballads that make up the central core of this album, I’ll be on the front row getting down to this band. In Adrienne Liesching, they have a distinctive singer able to move from the emotional to the strident in half a beat. Highlights? I just love «Blow My Mind» whether in straight rock or in dance remix form – it does the business for me. «Hands» and «Secret» are both striking ballads mixing emotion and poetry to neat effect whilst «Grow Alive» has a quirky vibe. If you enjoy the atmospheric music of bands like The Choir and Common Children, The Benjamin Gate touch on that kind of vibe but empower it with guts. [Mike Rimmer, Cross Rhythms, June 2000]
