Karaoke Superstars

Description

Karaoke Superstars is the debut album by the American pop/rock combo Superchic[k], released on Inpop Records in May 2001. The album was written, performed, and produced by Superchic[k] with Bill Deaton co-producing tracks 1, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, and 10.

The first offering from this Chicago eight piece garage band who have a missionary focus on the problems of today’s teenagers growing up in a world of media gloss and the fantasy perfection of the pop video. They pride themselves on “making the world safe to be ordinary.” Although only the two vocalists are female, their sound is reminiscent of The Bangles with a blend of pop, punk and rock. The lyrics, designed to encourage kids in their walk with God, straightforwardly put over a message but still maintain a quirky wit. «Super Trouper», about letting our light shine, could be the source of international incident, with a line like, “If you were a country you’d be Switzerland, you never take a stand.” A track, which is surely Top 40 material, «Barlow Girls», (already featured on The Experience 15), lets girls know they don’t have to dress sexily or date to be popular. Other standouts are «Big Star Machine» and «TV Land» (the aforementioned fantasy perfection of video and TV) and the mellower «Let It Be», about not being put down by people or ourselves. A new band, worth watching. [John Daniels, Cross Rhythms, July 2001]

SUPERCHIC[K] – Karaoke Superstars – PRODUCERS: Superchic[k] and Bill Deaton – Inpop Records 1237

This is a disc aimed at teens, for sure, but it’s actually for anyone young at heart. Musically, the songs are bouncy and buoyant. And although the band – two gals and five guys – may initially hook listeners with perky beats and catchy hooks, the songs contain messages about integrity and empowerment. The infectious opening track, «Barlow Girls», is already a hit at Christian radio; its chorus is irresistible: “All the boys in the band want a Valentine from a Barlow girl/ Boys think they’re the bomb cause they remind them of their mom.” The song «One Girl Revolution» is featured in the current Reese Witherspoon film Legally Blonde. This talented outfit could be one of the year’s break through Christian acts. [Deborah Evans Price, Billboard Magazine, August 4, 2001]
