Description
Promise Land is the sophomore solo album by the British singer and songwriter Sue Rinaldi of Heartbeat fame, released on Survivor Records in March 1998.
Although it’s four years since ‘Love Eternal‘, Sue has not been idle by any means. TV and radio communicator, contributor to Culture Vulture in New Christian Herald, worship leader, Stadium rocker with Noel Richards at Wembley, you name it, she does it. Not that Sue didn’t want to do any more recording, it’s just that she doesn’t do a new album for the sake of it. She has to believe in it, and ‘Promise Land’ is well worth the wait. Produced by Caroline Bonnett, who also helps out with songwriting. keyboards and vocals, there’s a little bit of everything here. Take as your ingredients dance, praise and worship, drum ‘n’ bass, pop, rock, even a ballad or two. Mix in some seasoned sessioners, add Kaz Lewis and Steve Quashie on backing vocals, allow to cook for 57 minutes and 59 seconds in your CD player and serve – very satisfying. Fave tracks of the moment: the title track, looking beyond the sadness at the death of Diana. Princess of Wales to find hope for the future; «Time And Again», which starts slow and ambient and picks up halfway through with a catchy drum loop to finish up praising the one to whom we can come back time and again, like it was the first time; and «Restless Pilgrim», a gentle, almost folksy piece with superb vocals from Caroline and Sue. The more I hear this one, the more I like it. Definitely one of the albums of the year so far. [Trevor Kirk, Cross Rhythms, June 1998]
