Steve Wiggins

Description

The self-titled solo debut album by the American singer and songwriter Steve Wiggins (later lead vocalist for Big Tent Revival) was released on Sparrow Records in 1991. The album was produced by Tom Laune for Ardent Productions. (This was the first production deal for Ardent, and Big Tent Revival was the first act that Ardent took to ForeFront Records.)

Premier, rather bravely, predicted that this debut from a 22 year old from Memphis “could be a major rock event of the 1990s”. That seems a little OTT, but what you do get is an acoustic orientated album of mainly evangelistic songs with some percussive rock production to give it a bit of bite and variety. Wiggins, who is not averse to a bit of Beale Street busking (how ‘street cred’ can you get?) has a nicely gnarled rock voice though occasionally his pitching slips a bit. The lyrics are pretty good, managing to be direct and uncomplicated without slipping into mere simplistic hectoring. Hats off to Sparrow for investing in a straight-off-the-streets rocker.
