He Holds the Keys, Sparrow Records CD Edition, 1986
Steve Green, a recent (well-deserved) Grammy and Dove nominee, might best be described as a male counterpart to Sandi Patti. The artists share the same producer and are equally adept at choosing the best in praise and worship material. This keen melodic sense is never more evident than on this CD version of Green’s second solo album.
‘He Holds the Keys’ was digitally recorded, mixed, and mastered. The choral and orchestral arrangements are splendid, and every type of instrumentation is featured, including the latest in synthesizers. Each musician and singer takes a recognizable place on the soundstage. Central to the production is, of course, Green’s magnificent voice. It soars above the dynamic numbers («He Holds the Keys») and wraps itself gently around the quieter tracks («The Lord Is Lifted Up»).
The capability of the digital format will probably be most appreciated on «When His Kingdom Comes». It builds dramatically from a delicate piano intro to a surging orchestral climax. (Goosepimple factor of 10!) This vivid example is but one of many highlights on the CD version of ‘He Holds the Keys’. [Bruce A. Brown, CCM, June/July 1986]
