Velour is the full-length debut album by the American alternative rock band Soulfood 76, independently released on Slackhin’ Records in 1994, distributed by Slackers. (The album was re-mixed at Stepping Stone Studios November 96 and re-issued as Velour (Retrospective) on Freedom Records the following year, featuring new cover artwork.) The album was recorded October 1993 at Audio Genesis in Seattle, Washington; with Aaron Sprinkle of Poor Old Lu fame, Charles Meserole, and the band producing.

Soulfood 76 is back with a retrospective of their old indie release: Velour. The funky, fuzz-box guitars and kid down the street garage vocals gives this band an interesting charm. With their style of music, the jam-based guitar rock that made the 70s great for rock and roll, Soulfood 76 is fun. However, this retrospective, like the original album, is uneven. I liked Original Soundtrack, the band’s last record. This one misses the hard rock edge of that release. Velour is less Lenny Kravitz and more Average White Band. The album includes reworkings of the songs from the original Velour and remixes of some earlier work to fulfill contractual requirements. I hope that soon they go back to the studio and work on a record of new material. The members of the band are good musicians and the concept is a party, but the songs here just fall short. I still look forward to the next project from these guys because they are skilled at imitating what made groups like Santana and Mountain icons of the Woodstock generation. The good news is that Soulfood 76 is different and will remain so; the bad news is that the material here on Velour is too mixed: good and bad, for me to recommend it.
