The compilation is a part of Word Record’s Definitive Collection Series featuring “the 10 quintessential songs that defined the artist’s career, complete with a career recap.”
This veteran gospel artist from North Carolina is still going strong aged 70 years having released a new album last year. If you got that album and now want to catch up on some of the goodies in her vast back catalogue then this compilation is for you though it has to be said that like many of the other albums in Authentic’s ‘The Definitive Gospel Collection; series there are not definitive at all, merely trawls through the artist’s material on Word. So if you’re looking for Shirley’s wonderful material on Hob or her classics with the Caravans, you’ll have to look elsewhere. What you will hear though on these ’90s tracks is one of gospel music’s most soulful voices. These mainly upbeat songs are guaranteed to lift your spirit; Shirley Caesar is everything you’d expect from a gospel singer and rightly earns the accolade as the Queen of gospel.
