Shirley Caesar – Rejoice

Description

Rejoice is an album by the American gospel singer and songwriter Shirley Caesar, released on Myrrh Records in 1980, a division of Word. Later also released on A&M Records. The album was recorded by Stan Dacus at Young ‘Un Sound in Nashville, Tennessee; with Tony Brown and Ken Harding producing. Mixed at Young ‘Un Sound and Quadrafonic Sound Studios in Nashville.

The album would win Shirley Caesar a Grammy in the category Best Soul Gospel Performance, Contemporary at the 23rd Annual Grammy Awards, February 25, 1981.

What we have here is contemporary church gospel in basic black. Dedicated to the artist’s mother (of 12 children) and “the oldest living Caesar,” Deacon (uncle) Wesley, the LP will please those who enjoy rock in the black gospel tradition. Shirley has a great voice and easy delivery, and her back-up, the Shirley Caesar Singers and Musicians, are excellent. An interesting note, Dylan’s «You Gotta Serve Somebody» is on this LP as well as a tune written by Shirley in honor of her mother. (Best cuts: “I Wanna Be Ready,” “It’s In The Book”) [CCM, September 1980]
