Description
Not the Same is the debut album by the American singer and songwriter Roby Duke (December 6, 1956 – December 26, 2007), released on MCA Songbird in January 1982, distributed by Sparrow Distribution in the Christian music market. (Also released on Good News Records.) The album was produced, recorded, and mixed by Jonathan David Brown at Whitefield Studios in Santa Ana and Poiema Studios in Camarillo, California. Basic track arrangements by John Patitucci, Harlan Rogers, Jonathan David Brown, and Roby Duke. Horn arrangements by Harlan Rogers of Koinonia fame. All songs written by Roby Duke except track A4 written by Cathy Spurr of Tamarack and Spurr & McNeil fame, track B1 written by John Patitucci, and track B2 written by Bruce Hibbard.
Roby Duke is backed by a session band consisting of Harlan Rogers on keyboards, Rob Watson on synthesizers, Hadley Hockensmith and Marty Walsh on guitars, and a rhythm section featuring John Patitucci on bass and Keith Edwards on drums, with Alex MacDougall providing percussion.
Born in 1956, Roby Duke was a singer-songwriter, great guitar player as well as a producer. He grew up near the Mississippi Delta and was influenced by Jazz and Blues sound and artistry.
The jazzrock sounds emanating from Roby Duke’s debut LP, ‘Not the Same’ (MCA/Songbird MCR-5019), would have a casual listener thinking they were hearing Boz Scaggs. But upon a closer range, they would come to realize very quickly that these songs had unmistakably contemporary Christian lyrics.
Roby has made more than a scratch on the surface of the Christian music industry with his vocal and songwriting talents. He wrote seven of the 10 songs contained on the LP, all of which are refreshingly original in lyrical composition.
Jonathan David Brown produced ‘Not the Same’, combining a tight rhythm section with a flexible, fluid-sounding mix.
Best cuts include: «O’ Magnify the Lord», «Love Is Here To Stay», and «Can’t Stop Runnin». [C.A. Burns, CCM, May 1982]
