Description
Turn Up Your Radio is the third album by the American hip-hop group Priesthood, released on Metro One in 2002.
Semi, Jraw and Swift are here again with a much more “back to those roots” sound. I am surprised at the joy of this album, since previous Priesthood outings have been a touch darker. Yet, this happy feel is confidently delivered, with the soulful rappers churning out lyrics about, “guessing who’s back” and “dippin’ off that funky track”. The rhymes leave a little to be desired. But, on further listening, I find that their good sense of rhythm, uplifting vocals and chilled-out backing tracks work well to provide a satisfying overall sound. Priesthood’s skill at combining soul and a distinctive “old-school” hip-hop groove is impressive. Contributions coming from Holy Breeze, Set Free, Youth Exodus and Sonz Of Trybe, are strong and pad the album out. This is a catchy release, not guaranteed to please all, but deserves to be recognised as a notable addition to the gospel CD racks. [David Bain, Cross Rhythms, May 2003]
