Breakfast at Ruby’s

Description

Breakfast at Ruby’s is the second live album by the British folk-pop duo Phil & John (Phil Baggaley and John Hartley), released on Kingsway Music in October 1994.

Having thrilled us all with their finest-by-far ‘Carnival Of Clowns‘ album I’m afraid the duo have rather let us down with a bump with this set. Recorded live in the autumn of ’93 during the twosome’s American tour with Phil Keaggy, it’s P&J without a band and with plenty of their famed on-stage banter. They mangle for laughs a version of Simon and Garfunkle’s «Homeward Bound» (a song they sang straight on ‘Live‘), do attractive versions of «When Genevive Calls» (here called «Genevive») and «She’s Always On My Mind» from ‘Carnival Of Clowns’ as well as a pleasant rendition of «Gabriel’s Sittin’ In». But it’s all low key and with shoddy packaging (no lyrics) this feels like a cheap, stop-gap release before the next real album. [Tony Cummings, Cross Rhythms, December 1994]
