Description
No Doy! is the debut album by the American alternative rock band Pep Squad, released on BEC Recordings in 1998, a division of Tooth & Nail Records. The album was produced and recorded by Chris Colbert of Breakfast with Amy fame at the Green Room in Huntington Beach, California. Mixed by Colbert at Front Page Studios in Glendale, California.
If you are into distortion, feedback and teen-aged angst adeptly mixed with some pretty darn good pop-rock sensibilities, then you’ll love Pep Squad’s BEC debut, ‘No Doy!’
Obvious comparisons will be made to the general market band Sonic Youth, and to a lesser extent to labelmate Starflyer 59. Solid, no-nonsense bass lines and competent, uncomplicated percussion create a firm foundation for some unruly guitar action. Lead vocalist Bryan Everett alternates between heavy breathing, screaming and cheerleading, often during the course of a single song. Everett’s sister, Kim, adds a playful turn to her vocals that lightens up the attitude of every song she appears on.
Lyrically the songs are best described as either enigmatic and challenging or just plain goofy, depending on your mood of the moment. Take, for instance, «Bug-Nug»: “He’s got a dragon on his back/ And a knife between his toes/ And he flies through the air/ Bug-Nug beware.”
The catchiest tune on the project, an Everybodyduck sound-a-like called «Jamie’s Kisses», is no less obscure: “Jamie’s kisses are like candy canes on Christmas/ Jamie’s kisses are red and white and twisted.” Neither sweet nor sour, gentle nor harsh, ‘No Doy!’ is a decent example of post-grunge modern rock.
