Big Dreams Little Rebellions

Description

Big Dreams Little Rebellions is an album by the British singer and songwriter Paul Field, released on ICC in May 1994.

They say that life begins at 40 and for Paul Field they (whoever these people are who say these things) are definitely right! Oh yes! This is a stonker! Tonsils at full stretch with an impassioned pleading soul, Paul Field has not sounded this good for ages. Field is backed by Iona‘s former rhythm section with Terl Bryant hitting things and Nick Beggs laying down some tasty bassy bits. At times this is distinctly rockular and you get some nice guitar and tasty organ adding flavour. Elsewhere, you can discover that Paul sings with a blue-eyed soul reminiscent of Mark Williamson (if you remember him). Lyrically, never less than thought provoking, Field has the ability to take a global view without losing the personal feel which draws the listener in. Whether it’s a gentle ballad like «All Embracing Love» which closes the album or the lyrical cut and thrust of «Somewhere Not So Far Away From Here» which tears at the heart, this album has so much to say. On «Big Dreams» Field sings, “Suddenly my future’s shorter than my past” but with the promise of more work like this, Paul, keep dreaming! [Mike Rimmer, Cross Rhythms, April 1995]
