Description
State of the Heart is an album by the British singer and songwriter Paul Field, released on ICC Records in 1992.
Just before I slammed this one into the music box I’d been putting together my top ten contemporary Christian albums of 1992 and the sad realisation was that not one British performer had made it there. OK so there haven’t been that many, and Phil and John are still hovering around the ten mark as I make a final decision in the coming weeks. Paul Field’s band is becoming a serious contender already – the album veers between refined P&W/contemporary if we’re trying to find an accurate slot for it. It contains some of the best Brit Christian music played with tremendous style and a tightness of production which would make it suitable airplay fodder for the US market. The album really takes off with «Touch The Flame» – the beautifully sung line “never let me go” provides a fine moment in a tremendous song, well worth a single release over the pond. «Easy Answers» rocks along well until you’re hit by one of the albums two storyline style songs which drive the message home; «Saviour» might seem a little twee in its lyric at times, sounding like a modern day «Power To All Our Friends» working, but it achieves its aim thanks to some superb vocals; «Child» follows similar lines. By far the best fun is «Harry And The Band» – Paul Field goes «Benny And The Jets» (check out old Elton you guys). Great product, great style, well done Paul.
