Description
No Turning Back is the third studio album by the American R&B/urban pop trio Out of Eden (sisters Lisa, Andrea, and Danielle Kimmey), released on Gotee Records in 1999, distributed by Chordant Distribution. The album was recorded by John Saylor, Michael Linney and Todd Collins and was produced by band member Lisa Kimmey, Linney, Collins, and Toby McKeehan (TobyMac of dc Talk fame). Mixed by Collins, Dan Shike and Serban Ghenea.
Blessings do come in threes. One would be hard-pressed to find three singing sisters as talented as the Kimmeys. And on their third album, Lisa, Andrea and Danielle succeed in taking their gossamer harmonies through a wide range of styles. No Turning Back mixes this inner-city tale, Kimmey points a well-placed finger at believers everywhere: “The children need an answer, and God needs your face.”
Musically, there’s never a dull moment on No Turning Back. The clavichord-driven chorus of «Window» pays tribute to Stevie Wonder’s «Pastime Paradise». Classical-guitar accents give «Open Up Your Heart» a George Michael feel, and the title track smokes with its sparse drum machine and deft rapping (courtesy of Gotee labelmates Grits and Knowdaverbs).
As R&B records go, No Turning Back is a pure pop affair, which proves a mixed blessing. While there’s no denying its tasteful musical tapestry, there are junctures that ache for more grittiness and earthiness a la Lauryn Hill. And two cuts («River» and «Here’s My Heart») utilize one of R&B’s most worn-out clichés, quoting the vocal line from «A-Tisket, A-Tasket». But those are minor annoyances on what’s otherwise a well-wrought, soulful disc. Listen, and you’ll be blessed – or make that thrice-blessed. [Lou Carlozo, CCM, July 1999]
