Description
Band & Bodyworks is an album by the American singer and songwriter Noel Paul Stookey of Peter, Paul & Mary fame, released on Neworld Media in 1979, distributed by Sparrow Records. The album was recorded by John Stuart and Stu Davis at Neworld Media’s 8-track recording studio in S. Blue Hill, Maine, with overdubs recorded by Mike Green at Intermedia Sound in Boston, Massachusetts. Produced by Neworld Media. The album was Grammy-nominated.
Band & Bodyworks was included among CCM Magazine’s Top 10 Contemporary/Rock Albums of 1979 – Our maine man gave us his best studio album yet in 1979 with a collection of everything from folk ballads to a dose of rock’n’roll. An engaging, thoroughly entertaining record from Stookey & Friends.
Band & Bodyworks was also named one of Campus Life‘s Top Records of 1979, included on a list featuring six albums released during the last year (published in the November 1979 issue of the magazine). – An album by Noel Stookey is like a visit from an old friend; it leaves you with a comfortable feeling and a desire to hear more soon. On ‘B&BW,’ Noel paces himself, expertly mixing his familiar folk style with more up-tempo songs featuring a band. The whole production is first rate, and Stookey’s handling of a song is something to savor. There’s a lot of good listening on this album. Something for everyone.”
The album caused some initial controversy because the original cover depicted Noel dancing with a partner in a bar where patrons could be seen drinking and smoking. Sparrow Records fearing that their customers would be offended by this pulled the artwork and reissued it without the picture (a plane white cover featuring the original heading only).
BAND & BODYWORKS – NOEL PAUL STOOKEY – Neworld NWS 012379 (7.98)
Stookey has had several solo albums since leaving Peter, Paul & Mary and this latest follows in the same melodic, light vocal vein. There’s a religious undertone but it’s more than worthy of play on several formats. [Record World, August 4, 1979 (Album Picks section)]
BAND & BODYWORKS – NOEL PAUL STOOKEY – Neworld NWS 021379
This LP is a solid offering of top notch songs, excellent musicianship and creative production. Stookey’s warm, folksy approach works beautifully in the variety of musical styles presented. Highlights include «I Wanna Testify», «Lay Me Down», «Love All Around» and «Know Jesus». Acceptance on the secular front should be no problem with this one.
