It’s Personal

Description

It’s Personal is the third full-length album by the British singer and songwriter Nanette (Nanette Welmans), independently released on GoDance Records in 2005. The album was produced, recorded, and mixed (as well as co-written) by Nanette’s keyboardist/drummer/songwriter husband Russ Courtenay.

If you’re not in the know about Nanette Welmans let me state quite boldly that she is one of the finest, and most underrated, singers on the whole British scene. Her voice is the kind of precision instrument of uncanny interpretive power that X Factor wannabes would kill for. Yet despite this Nanette has somehow missed most of the limelight with her occasional recordings, veering from anaemic pop to big band jazz, just failing to hit the spot. All that changes with the release of this breathtaking album. Here her soulful, mellifluous tones are given just the right kind of funky production to bring out all the sweet soulfulness of these 10 self-written songs and whether she’s purring and emoting over a ricocheting groove on songs like «Heaven» or «Jesus Love» or coming on with all the grace note confidence of the soul ballad diva on songs like «Miracle» and «Sister» the effect is truly marvellous. Here’s an album every lover of GREAT pop and R&B voices will want to locate. [Tony Cummings, Cross Rhythms, January 2006]
