Kingdom Upside Down

Description

Kingdom Upside Down is the fifth album by the American singer and songwriter Morgan Cryar, released on Reunion Records in 1990, manufactured and distributed by Word. The album was produced by Chris Harris and Mark Heimermann for Funattic Productions.

Remember Morgan Cryar’s album with Reunion last year? Probably not. ‘Like A River‘, fell short of the mark and off the charts as he struggled to define his sound in the pop/rock field.

“The time has come for getting even/ Die to yourself and give up the ghost.” From his opening song «Give Up the Ghost», come prophetic words from a man who is not fooling around this time. Cryar lands on his feet with ‘Kingdom Upside Down’ – a collection of hot tunes that should have been his new-label-debut.

Teamed with producers Chris Harris and Mark Heimermann, Cryar recreates his sound with an album of well-balanced, highly listenable songs filled with signature Prism-like harmonies, warm ballads, and tunes that sizzle and pop.

While ‘Like A River’ leaned towards introspection, ‘Kingdom Upside Down’ is straight-ahead pop with a capital FUN that leaves the listener wanting for more – a very “up” album that dares you not to dance.

Highlights include the aforementioned opening song and title cut, «Kingdom Upside Down». On the lighter side «I Ain’t Got Nothing» and «Think About God» are fun light-funk pieces. The ballads tend to slow things down a bit with «Heavy Heart» and «See You on the Other Side», – times when the album leans towards formula rather than feel – but it’s forgiveable in light of the strength of this project’s very talented players.

‘Kingdom Upside Down” features different sounds and different producers and may likely attract a crowd of listeners new and old, re-discovering a very talented musician. [Kathleen A. Ervin, CCM, July 1990]
