Vigilante of Hope

Description

Vigilante of Hope is the third studio album by the American rapper Michael Peace, released on Reunion Records in 1989, distributed by Word. The album was recorded by Jonathan Akre at Alphabet Studios, Innermission Productions, and Paisley Park Studios in Minneapolis, Minnesota; with Dez Dickerson producing and arranging for 3D Productions. Music by Dez Dickerson with lyrics written by Michael Peace.

With the growth of rap into a genre as grand, varied and diverse as the term “rock ‘n’ roll”, it’s clear that the slow rap of Michael Peace is not meant to rock the Run DMC house or swing into the suburban malls of Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince. Peace’s cool groove, laid down in Minneapolis by ‘1999’-era Price guitarist Dez Dickerson, is an arty, moody progressive bed for his doctrinally pedantic rants. While his goals are obstensibly noteworthy, (to share biblical truths in a straight-forward and matter-of-fact manner and establish a positive perception for kids who want to live for Christ but find it uncool on the streets to be a Christian), ‘Vigilante of Hope’ bludgeons away at Peace’s key points without the humor, self-effacing charm, and fun that makes rap endearing to the pop music fan.

Direct, pointed and aggressive, the Peace/Dickerson team have created a fine set of sounds, grooves and slow rap punch. It seems likely, however, that street rap fans of the Yo! MTV Raps ilk, would be more responsive to a more subtle approach. At times Peace sounds a bit like those preachers who stand on city streets speaking through a little amplifier, trying to get the attention of the bustling crowd. While one can agree with much of the content, the context and posture feels awkward and ineffective. Hard times require desperate means, and for what it’s worth, Michael Peace, once again is rappin’ bold. [Brian Quincy Newcomb, CCM, September 1989]
