Description

Overcomer the fourth full-length studio album by the American contemporary gospel singer Mandisa (Mandisa Lynn Hundley), released on Sparrow Records in August 2013.

Mandisa is today one of the few artists launched through the American Idol talent search who is now selling more CDs than her debut. This, her fourth album, sports a hit title track and with its breezy dance pop groove and its encouragement to overcome our problems will no doubt get airplay on Cross Rhythms. The songs here are all well crafted and Mandisa’s soulful phrasing ensures that «Press On», with its exhortation to press on through the storms of life, is a memorable song of perseverance. This theme runs through into «What Scars Are For» while the penultimate track, «Praying For You» is a reflective gem which combines pop, contemporary R&B and doo wop. For more club music tastes, «Face 2 Face» and «Joy Unspeakable» lend those frenetic cuts a distinctly techno-tinged undercurrent. The most pleasing expansion of Mandisa’s musical armoury, though, is the song Mandisa has written with worship hitmaker Israel Houghton, «At All Times» which incorporates some call and response fervour with just the right amount of modern day sensibility. The final track builds into a powerful finale with its telling lines, “I give you all my weakness/ You give me your strength.” The whole of this quality album comes across as autobiographical and if you are looking for an album to encourage, this will do nicely.
