Maia Amada

Description

The self-titled debut album by the American singer Maia Amada was released on DaySpring Records in ‎1992, a division of Word. Also manufactured and distributed by Epic, a division of Sony Music. The album was produced by Shane Keister.

Though the shelves are already bulging with a fresh crop of mature-sounding dance/pop femmes, Maia Amada isn’t necessarily just another voice. Amada’s versatile alto and song selection for her first album befit an unabashed “adult dance/pop” tag. Her debut album is a half-and-half collection of dance tracks of varying tempos and balladry of the kind as ready for mainstream radio as it is for inspirational radio stations who can live without many Christian buzzwords.

“Love” is all over this album as the spiritual fruit of choice, popping up in a few song titles and nearly all the tunes’ lyrics. It’s a fair way to balance crossover aspirations and Christian identification. The best of the dance tunes here, like «There’s a Place» and «Soul Deep» (not the Box Tops’ oldie), either flirt with or go all the way with Latin freestyle textures to make the best of Amada’s Spanish blood (with the proper remixes, club jocks will trip over themselves to play her).

Amada’s ballads sometimes reach the grandeur of Burt Bacharach and Hal David at their peak, with «Love Never Fails» and «Only Love», the most “gospel”-oriented number here, highlighting Amada’s range and the production finesse of Shane Keister. If she’s as bold in the mainstream with her message as her voice is on this set of superior pop craft, Maia Amada is one promising musical witness. [Jamie Lee Rake, CCM, September 1992]
