Description
The Ferris Wheel is the sixth album by the American alternative rock band Mad at the World, released on Frontline Records in 1993.
Roger and Randy Rose reunite for another round of riff-heavy rock, but they’ve set aside their affection for the ’80s-era Goth which inspired their last few efforts. This time, the Brothers Rose back up a few decades, often emulating Lenny Kravitz’ take on The Beatles’ ‘Revolver’/’Rubber Soul’ period, with frequent attention given to the psychedelic/glam sound of the ’70s era, such as the music of T.Rex. Rogers’ voice is the more delicate of the two, which perfectly suits the folk-oriented numbers such as «Jesus Lead Me» and «Losing Game». Randy still like to growl, as he displays during his featured lead vocals on «When Life has a Plan» and «Going Nowhere Again». Whether writing together or separately, the brothers offer no mixed metaphors or veiled messages; you’ll have no problem interpreting MATW’s direct approach. The band’s performances on ‘Ferris Wheel’ are especially crisp and tight; the Roses’ brother Ray sits in on bass on three tunes, and long-time guitarist and bassist Brent Gordon and Mike Pendelton have been replaced by Ben Jacobs and Mike Link. Jacobs in particular offers some tasty licks, while Link plays in a melodic, McCartney-esque style. [Bruce A. Brown, CCM, October 1993]
