Description

The self-titled debut album by the American pop singer Kim Boyce was released on Myrrh Records in 1986, a division of Word. Also distributed by A&M Records. The album was produced by Brian Tankersley.

For starters, this sounds a lot like Madonna’s classy, infectious brand of dance/pop music. Is that a compliment? Well, yeah. First of all, Brian Tankersley has outdone himself on the production end of things. This is one smokin’ little album. And there’s a heck of a lot more pop crossover potential here than on other highly touted projects of 1986.

What about Ms. Boyce? (This review has sort of been “everything but the girl,” hasn’t it?) Suffice to say she not only possesses the right type of voice for this material, but one gets the feeling we’re just hearing the proverbial tip of the iceberg. Listen to her exceptional phrasing on ballads like «Here» and «How Will They Remember?» or to how her tone remains full in the higher registers, instead of thinning out to the piercing, irritating “bleat of a sheep” that the aforementioned Madonna was inclined toward on her early albums.

The only real problem with this album is it’s too darn short. Am I the only one bothered by 35-minute LPs? Heck, I didn’t even pay for this and it still ticks me off. Be that as it may, with Christian-owned record companies producing projects and developing artists like this, there’s bound to be life on that dance floor yet. [Thom Granger, CCM, January 1987]
