As I Am

As I Am is the seventh album by the American pop singer Kim Boyce, released on Warner Alliance in 1997, a gospel division of Warner Bros Records. The album was produced and recorded by Bryan Lenox at Omnisound, Sidekick Studio, and The Playground (except track 10 produced by James Hollihan Jr.). Mixed by Lenox at The Playground.

In the mid-’80s Kim Boyce was pushing the boundaries of the tame and the lame with her sugary yet revved-up style of sacred pop, a formula that continued to influence her fine work well into the early 90s.

‘As I Am’ (Boyce’s eighth album in 11 years) finds her music mellowing to inspirational pop, with a few kicks from her musical past. It is not lacking in the fully-orchestrated, ever-modulating, rafter-reaching resonance that she has frequently accomplished. This project also displays some softer, more sauntering moments, the most outstanding of which is found in «The Sound of Your Voice». Produced and co-written by James Hollihan, Jr., it has a delicious 1940s nightclub feel to it, much like the great music of Nat King Cole.

Certainly, Boyce has a well-trained voice and a desire to have a redemptive influence on others. Yet, one probably cannot say that the songs are exceptionally artistic. Unfortunately, the themes and text are predictable, reflecting somewhat of a lite version of life and faith. Still, to her credit, Boyce touches on such interesting and relevant topics as living in the moment («Who Hung the Moon») and the folly of trying to effect change in the world without changing ourselves («The World Within»).

While some will enjoy this album much like they would a sweet and fancy dessert, others in search of a stick-to-your-ribs musical meal may leave the table a bit hungry. [Laura Harris, CCM, May 1997]
