Attitude

Description

Attitude is the third album by the American singer and songwriter Kenny Marks, released on Dayspring Records in 1985, a division of Word. Also distributed by A&M Records. The album was recorded and mixed by David Schober with Bubba Smith producing.

Have you had, as we say in hip ’80s patois, “an attitude adjustment” lately? If not, then Kenny Marks’ new LP may be just the ticket to smooth out a few of those rough spots for you. Mr. Marks, you see, is truly an ’80s type guy. He’s got a slick coif, a Don Johnson 3-day shadow, some Nautilus-induced pecs, and (gasp!) a tattoo to prove it. He’s even got the appropriately self-effacing sense of humor. In the latest ad for the ‘Attitude’ album, he shaves the beard and washes off the tattoo!

More important than what’s on the cover, though, is what’s in the grooves, and Kenny definitely delivers the goods in that department. ‘Attitude’ aims for the late teens to early twenties crowd without pandering, and it has more than a few tunes that will satisfy the post-college audience as well. The tracks are laced with dance rock delights from the Petty/Byrds jingle of «It’s a Good Thing» to the big beat blast of «Soul Reviver». Mark also sensitively deals with a number of serious subjects. «The Party’s Over» tells the heart-wrenching consequences of pre-marital sex (of course, that’s not a problem for Christian couples, right?) while «Heart Trouble» reminds us married folks about how quickly a relationship can go sour when we don’t take our troubles to the Source of Love.

In one of the album’s most touching moments, Kenny pays tribute to the «Heroes» – to those persons we all know who toil behind the scenes with little or no recognition, those “givers who takers forget.” Mark manages to make adulthood seem like not such a bad deal without sounding like a recruitment poster for Up with People. Like the song says – “Do you wanna be nasty, do you wanna be nice?” Kenny Marks provides us with nine solid reasons for changing out Attitude. [Bruce A. Brown, CCM, April 1986]
