Description
Hymns for the Christian Life is an album by the British worship duo Keith & Kristyn Getty, independently released on Getty Music in October 2012. The album was produced by Charlie Peacock.
Featuring musical guests Moya Brennan, Ricky Skaggs, and Alison Krauss
In a Christian music scene where many worship songs are lyrically lightweight and where too many albums of low quality bearing the marketing buzz word “Celtic” have been foisted on the public, this project stands out as one of the highest creative integrity. Keith Getty has long been renowned for providing the Church with “singable theology” and with two of Nashville’s finest producers in tow (Charlie Peacock and Ed Cash) and some truly wonderful guests, the result is the finest ever album by the husband and wife duo. Wherever you turn there are breathtaking gems. Moya Brennan brings a haunting Gaelic vocal to Kristyn’s original lullaby «A Mother’s Prayer»; the ageless «Nothing But The Blood» has a masterly Irish arrangement which includes a bit of long-time ceilidh favourite «Toss The Feathers»; while that dazzling guitar-picker Ricky Skaggs adds some jaw-dropping licks on the instrumental «The Village Reel». Possibly the best track of all is the new version of the Getty/Townend classic «In Christ Alone» where the poignant tones of Alison Krauss take the beautiful hymn to a new level. Throughout, Getty’s lyrics are deeply Scriptural and occasionally powerfully challenging (for instance, you wouldn’t hear a song like «Simple Living» sung in any of the prosperity gospel mega churches). All in all, an album which will feed hearts and spirits for years to come. [Tony Cummings, Cross Rhythms, January 2013]
A husband wife team from lreland, The Getty’s have gained notoriety for Keith’s collaborations with Stuart Townend, including the modern worship staple, «In Christ Alone», portrayed here as a duet between Kristin and Allison Krauss and a disc highlight. Coupling the theological density of hymns with the earthier tone of Irish inflected folk/pop, the Getty’s create wonderfully singable songs that a variety of denominations should feel comfortable singing. «A Mother’s Prayer» was written by Kristyn and is beautifully essayed, in Gaelic, by Moya Brennan. «Kyrie Eleison» was written for the historic Lausanne Congress in Capetown South Africa and carries the familiar sway of African rhythms, while «Before You I Kneel» was written as a Prayer for productiveness and features the familiar melody of «Wauchet Auf» by J.S. Bach weaving in and out of the arrangement. «Simple Living» is the Getty’s at their most charming as the lilting Irish-folk melody is enhanced by Ricky Skaggs sprightly mandolin playing. Perfect for at home listening as well as congregational performance, Hymns for the Christian Life is a wonderful addition to the hymnodic cannon of the modern church. [Shawn McLaughlin, Christian Musician Magazine, January/February 2013 (Vol. 18, Iss. 1)]
Providing “singable theology” for the modern day church with their Celtic-laden hymnody, the singer-songwriter husband-wife team from Ireland releases their first record since moving to Nashville. Utilizing Music City staples to produce (Charlie Peacock, Ed Cash), Hymns exhibits Nashville’s standard studio shine while marrying the Gettys’ new world hymns with their old world Irish traditions – exemplified beautifully by Moya Brennan’s Gaelic contribution on Kristyn’s original lullaby, «A Mother’s Prayer». The Caribbean backbone of «Kyrie Eleison» is fresh, and the Alison Krauss duet on Getty classic, «In Christ Alone», is sweet. But the Ricky Skaggs mandolin-induced Irish-folk charm of «Simple Living» is absolutely magical. [Andrew Greer, CT, October 9, 2012]
