Sounds of Heaven is the sixth album by the American singer Kathy Troccoli, released on Reunion Records in 1995, distributed by Word Distribution and BMG Distribution. The album was recorded by Eric Rudd and Steve Bishir with Brown Bannister, Peter Bunetta, and Rick Chudacoff producing. Mixed by Eric Sarafin and Bishir.
Featuring session musicians like Gordon Kennedy, Jerry McPherson, and Dann Huff on guitars, Mike Brignardello and Jimmie Lee Sloas on bass, as well as Chris McHugh and Peter Bunetta on drums, among others.
Kathy Troccoli took Christian music by storm 13 years ago with her passionate vocals and aggressive pop, not to mention throwing in some unique jazz influences for extra measure. After experiencing moderate mainstream success with her to latest albums, Troccoli now returns to the roots of her career with her seventh album ‘Sounds of Heaven’.
With this new project she delivers a pleasant surprise – not that the music is unique or innovative or that she sings lower than ever before, but that she has chosen to record 10 songs that are so blatantly intending to communicate the love for Christ. The messages in the songs are strong – especially on «That’s How Much I Love You» where she takes the voice of God, expressing all that He has done for us to show His great love. «Missing You» is about the longing of believers to be together with Christ when He returns, and «May I Be His Love» conveys the desire to show a friend the love of Christ with actions rather than words: “May I be His love for you/ May I lift your eyes toward heaven/ May I come to you and lead you to His light/ May I cry His tears for you/ May I be the place that you can run to where you’ll hear His voice/ And see Him in my eyes.”
The production and arrangements follow the “simpler-is-better” method on most of the songs, although the elaborate orchestration on «Hallelujahs» is gorgeous, and most of the songs fall into one of two categories – big anthems or quiet and reflective ballads.
Troccoli’s desire to share her heart in such a personal and powerful way is bound to touch many people as the songs express exactly how many people feel about their desire to be closer to Christ. That alone provides reason enough to take notice of this project. [Mark A. Smeby, CCM, September 1995]
