Description
Hiding Place is a solo album by the American singer and songwriter John Michael Talbot of Mason Proffit fame, released on Sparrow Records in 1990. The album was recorded and mixed by Bernie Kirsh and was produced by Billy Ray Hearn. Orchestrated by Phil Perkins.
Since the release of ‘The Lord’s Supper‘ eleven years ago, John Michael Talbot has been continuously refining his classical/folk fusion sound, exploring various musical themes from symphonic dance to aggressive modern choral and orchestra works to stark lone guitar and voice settings. Now, the full benefits of his varied expressions have come to fruition on this, his finest recording to date.
‘Hiding Place’ is a collection of hauntingly beautiful tone poems featuring Talbot’s guitar and multi-tracked vocals accompanied by Phil Perkin’s understated chamber orchestra arrangements. The songs flow seamlessly together both musically and lyrically as Talbot’s plaintive, rich voice sings of the need of the believer for refuge in Christ and the repentance of sin. Talbot never preaches or looks down on others in his words; they are painfully blunt as they provide a glimpse directly into the soul of an artist both resting in Christ and striving to serve Him. Musically impeccable and lyrically stunning in its forthrightness, ‘Hiding Place’ is a quiet, brilliant work. [Jerry Wilson, CCM, August 1990]
