Description
King Raven, Volumes 1-3 is an album by the American singer, songwriter, keyboardist, and producer Jeff Johnson with Brian Dunning, independently released on Ark Records in 2008.
Inspired by Stephen R. Lawhead’s King Raven Trilogy, this full-length CD compiles all of the songs from the critically acclaimed King Raven EPs Vols. 1 & 2 with four additional compositions. Nearly one hour of music, the American/Irish duo of Johnson and Dunning offer an inspired modern Celtic soundtrack to accompany Lawhead’s fresh telling of the Robin Hood legend.
Come, walk with me my little one through the cool wood of the forest. What is this you say, you fear the phantom of the forest, fear not for he is Rhi Bran the Hud, King Raven. All those who are of a pure heart are under his protection, there is no cause to fear.
Once again Jeff Johnson & Brian Dunning have given us a musical interpretation of the newest Stephen Lawhead novel entitled Hood. It is book one of a trilogy based on the exploits of the character who was to become known as Robin Hood. This musical journey is the first installment of a trilogy of ep’s to be released to coincide with the release of each book. Johnson & Dunning are joined on this journey through the wood by Tim Ellis on acoustic & electric guitars, Phil Baker on bass and Gwen Franz on viola. One thing I have come to expect from the releases on Ark Music for over the past twenty five or more years is absolute perfection, not only sonically but in every aspect of the product, King Raven Vol.1 holds true to that standard in every sense. It is a delightful feast for both the eyes and ears, Johnson & Dunning are at the top of their game. The four cuts on the disc, «The Flight of Rhi Bran», «Power of Heaven», «Elder World», and «Fire Light (Love’s Pure Light)» each magically bring to life different sections of the book and enhance the overall experience. I find myself listening to this album over and over again and picturing in my mind the section of the tale that it interprets. The kind folks at Ark Music have given us one of their best releases yet and as far as “Hood” goes this very well could be the best series Stephen Lawhead has ever done.
