Training Up the Troops, Volume 2

Description

Training Up the Troops, Volume 2 is an album by the British singer and songwriter Ishmael, independently released on Kingsway Music in 1989.

Just one question – how does he do it? I’ve appreciated Ish’s ministry for about 14 years now, he’s produced endless classic songs, always remained contemporary, relevant and stunning. This new release maintains his highest standards, even maybe a little better than ‘T.U.T.T. Vol 1’, covering such diverse styles as aggressive punk/new wave, Cockney knees-up, tongue-in-cheek country, smart instrumentals and a few ballads which are absolute beauties. Oh, why do I bother, I gave up trying to classify Ishmael years ago. He’s very special and unique.

Special nod must go to this regular band who provide the driving sound which makes the music so explosive. Ish’s brother Timbo on bass, Timmy Jupp on keyboards, Terl Bryant‘s the drummer and the underrated Douggie Horley on lead guitar, all topped off with Andy Piercy, Ish’s old partner and After the Fire frontman playing acoustic guitar. Of course “The Glories” pop up occasionally to add to the fun.

This is vintage Ishmael and it includes one of his best songs ever, «Angels», which is a kind of rock lullaby and if that sounds like an impossible contradiction, well that’s Ishamel for you, my friend. Get ‘T.U.T.T. 2’ for a unique slab of madcap musical mayhem and mighty marvelous ministry. (Please note that ‘Training Up the Troops Vols. 1 & 2’ are available on one 27-track CD.)
