Ill Harmonics – Take Two

Description

Take Two is the sophomore full-length album by the American hip-hop duo Ill Harmonics (Blake Knight and Playdough, a.k.a. Doug Krum), released on BEC Recordings’ hip-hop imprint Uprok in March 2002, a division of Tooth & Nail Records. The album was written and produced by Ill Harmonics. Mixed by John Wirtz, assisted by Jeremy Wade, at Music Cafe Studios in Columbus, Ohio. Pro Tools editing by Blake Knight and John Wirtz.

They say never judge a book by its cover, and if you’ve ever had first hand experience of this you’ll understand why after listening to these guys. Ill Harmonics, the duo of Playdough and Black Knight, rhyme in what is clearly a natural environment for them. They appear to have an innate ability to flow with their catchy lyrics and bouncy vamps. «Destiny» is one of my favourite tracks, just for the flow. Direct and on-key. «Mr Chris T. Ian» is without doubt a wake up call. What is interesting from my listening is the acoustic feel they have given to their hip hop sound. In fact they’ve added a live instrument sound to their production which may sound fairly simple but has certainly given this album a different edge. You’re probably thinking that I liked the album, and overall you’d be right. To be truthful I had to listen to it a few times but I was soon feeling it. As I said, never judge a book by its cover, and this certainly applies with these guys. Go on – give it a listen! [Howard McCalla, Cross Rhythms, July 2002]
