Hymns in the House is the debut album by the American dance/house project Hypersonic, released on Essential Records in 1995, a division of Brentwood Music. The album was recorded by Dave Sears at Voodoo Studios in Chicago, Illinois; with Ian Eskelin of Code Of Ethics fame producing for Vivid Productions. Mixed by Sears at Carport in Nashville, Tennessee. It’s a collection of famous hymns reworked into the garage/happy house genre of dance, arranged and programmed by Sears and Eskelin. Featuring vocals by Tabitha Fair, except tracks 2 and 11 featuring Crystal Lewis.

When I received this album and noted the producer’s name Ian Eskelin I thought, “Yes! Some decent dance music to review!” Then I saw the track listing. Would this “yesterday’s hymns mixed for today’s generation” concept work or would it be another feeble attempt at contemporising hymnody? But as soon as the first groove slammed into gear I knew that this album was a banging delight. There are some really hooky rhythms and great sound quality. Good old hymns that have been nearly worn out have been put to serious dance grooves. So nip out to your local Christian bookshop and buy a copy of it, and get dancing to «Amazing Grace» and «Power In The Blood»! The only low point (if you can call it a low point!) on the album is the song «Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee», which features Crystal Lewis – I think that the vocals are a tad overdone.
